Disappointment into Delight (Part One)

Early morning view of small boats and their masts reflected in the water in Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia.

We’ve all had times when things didn’t go our way. You know what I’m talking about: those times when our expectations were as high as the sun, and nothing turned out as we’d hoped.

This was one of those mornings.

During our trip to Nova Scotia, my wife and I got up before dawn and drove to catch the sunrise in Mahone Bay. Unfortunately, this morning turned out to be completely overcast, with a misty white wall that blanketed the sun. No sunrise to photograph, not a trace of color in the sky.

I was disappointed and annoyed at first. We got up at 5 a.m. for this? But after a few minutes, I took a breath and observed the beauty all around us. Looking out across the water, I saw a tranquil view of boats and their reflected masts. The misty white wall provided a clean background with Zen-like simplicity, and I loved the quiet symmetry.

Once again, I found that disappointment can turn into delight if we let go of our plans and remain open to new possibilities.

In my next post, I’ll share another unexpected delight that I saw on this overcast, sunrise-free morning. Stay tuned later this week.
