The Mark We Leave

Tree-shaped figures etched into the sand by ocean waves near Charleston, SC

These tree-shaped patterns were left in the sand by ocean waves near Charleston, South Carolina. They strike me as a sublime example of nature’s capacity to inspire wonder through the simplest things — and I believe they carry an important message for us.

Like the ocean, we leave an imprint behind, etched in time by the lives we lead.

Every action we take leaves a mark on the world. Everything we do has an impact. It’s the cumulative effect of our actions, building upon each other like a succession of waves, that creates our legacy — our imprint in the sand.

Every day, we have a choice to make: What do we want our imprint to be?
